LSAW Welded Pipe: Precision-Engineered Solutions for Global Energy Infrastructure

2026-09-01

In the demanding world of energy transmission and heavy infrastructure, the choice of steel pipe is critical to project safety and longevity. SOLID proudly presents its comprehensive range of Longitudinal Submerged Arc Welded (LSAW) pipes, engineered with precision to meet the rigorous requirements of high-pressure oil and gas pipelines, structural applications, and offshore projects.

I. Product Overview: What is LSAW Pipe?

LSAW (Longitudinal Submerged Arc Welded) pipe is a large-diameter welded pipe characterized by a single straight seam running along its length. LSAW pipes are made from medium- to heavy-thickness steel plates that are cold-formed into a cylindrical shape and joined together using double-sided submerged arc welding.

Unlike SSAW (spiral submerged arc welded) pipes and ERW (electric resistance welded) pipes, LSAW pipes have a straight single weld seam. This results in uniform welding quality, ultra-low residual stress, and outstanding structural stability. The manufacturing process gives LSAW pipes exceptional ductility, toughness, uniformity, plasticity, and excellent sealing performance. The result is a product that can withstand extreme operating conditions, including high pressure, low temperatures, and corrosive environments.

According to API standards, LSAW pipes are the only designated pipe type for large-scale oil and gas transmission pipelines passing through Class 1 and Class 2 areas—such as high-cold regions, seabeds, and densely populated urban zones.

III. Manufacturing Technology: Three Forming Methods

SOLID LSAW pipes are produced through three main forming methods, each optimized for specific production scenarios:

  1. UOE Process: The steel plate is pressed into a U-shape, then an O-shape, followed by internal and external seam welding and mechanical expansion. This method offers high production capacity and is the industry standard for high-grade pipeline pipe.
  2. JCOE Process: The plate is incrementally formed through a series of J-presses, welded, and expanded. JCOE mills require lower capital investment and offer greater flexibility in diameter and wall thickness combinations—particularly advantageous for small and medium diameter thick-walled pipes.
  3. Roll-Bend (RBE) Process: The plate is progressively rolled into a cylinder. This method is used for thicker walls and smaller production runs.

All three methods employ two-pass submerged arc welding (one internal, one external), ensuring deep weld penetration and superior weld quality. Each pipe undergoes mechanical cold expansion after welding to eliminate residual stress and enhance dimensional accuracy.

IV. Quality Control & Inspection

Every SOLID LSAW pipe undergoes rigorous quality assurance procedures before shipment:

  • Chemical Component Analysis– Verification of alloying elements and impurities
  • Mechanical Properties Testing– Ultimate tensile strength, yield strength, and elongation
  • Hydrostatic Testing– pressure-tested to verify sealing integrity
  • Exterior Size Inspection– Dimensional verification against precise tolerances

Mill Test Certificates complying with EN 10204 / 3.1B are provided with every shipment, ensuring full material traceability and international compliance.

V. Applications

SOLID LSAW pipes are widely utilized across multiple industries:

  • Oil & Gas Transmission: Cross-country pipelines and high-pressure transmission lines
  • Offshore Projects: Platform structural members and subsea pipelines
  • Water Infrastructure: High-pressure water mains and penstocks for hydroelectric plants
  • Construction & Piling: Large-diameter foundation piling pipes
  • Petrochemical: Process piping and structural components
